H2 GENERATION

WATER ELECTROLYSIS

An electrical power source is connected to two electrodes, or two plates (typically made from some inert metal such as platinum, stainless steel or iridium) which are placed in the water. Hydrogen will appear at the cathode (the negatively charged electrode, where electrons enter the water), and oxygen will appear at the anode (the positively charged electrode).

Nowadays Renewable Energy Sources such as Wind or Solar can be used to generate Renewable Hydrogen, achiving the Zero emissions energy supply to our Society.

Overall reaction: 2 H2O(l) → 2 H2(g) + O2(g)

Reduction at cathode: 2 H+(aq) + 2e− → H2(g)

Oxidation at anode: 2 H2O(l) → O2(g) + 4 H+(aq) + 4e−

HYDROCARBONS STEAM REFORMING

Steam reforming is a method for producing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or other useful products from hydrocarbon fuels such as , methanol, natural gas but other fuels are also being consider such as propane, gasoline, diesel and ethanol. The reformer which reacts steam at high temperature with the fossil fuel, allowing the extraction of Hydrogen which compose the fossil fuel.

Steam reforming: CnHm + n H2O ↔ (n + m/2) H2 + n CO

Water-gas shift: CO + H2O ↔ H2 + CO2
